Frequently Asked Questions

If you are looking to keep noise minimal with your garage door system, the belt drive is a great option! Known to be the “whisper” belt drive, this drive type will help reduce noise in comparison with the standard chain drive; the DC motor belt drive known for being the quietest. The DC motor also comes with options for advanced features such as battery backup and a two-way audio camera. If you prefer to stick with a chain drive, the ¾ HP or DC motor will be quieter than the standard chain drives. The side-mounted jackshaft is also a good option to reduce noise and vibration.
-
Since the garage door springs are what do the heavy lifting of the garage door, the automatic door opener is in place to gently assist its operation. If you have a heavier door, you will have stronger springs. This is why the same opener that is put on a one car garage door is also used for a two car garage door. A ½ HP professional grade opener such as LiftMaster Professional has ample power to life most garage doors. However, if you have an oversized, extremely heavy, or solid wood door, you may opt for a ¾ HP or DC motor instead.

The chain drive and belt drive are both excellent options! This really comes down to needs and preference. The chain drives are extremely durable openers that were originally built for heavy loads and frequent use. The belt drives are excellent openers as well and are also known for being a little quieter than the chain drive openers.

Yes! Openers on the market today come in such a wide range of quality. Many are builder’s grade openers that are rated for a much shorter lifespan than professional grade openers. At O’Brien, we hand pick our manufacturers from names such as LiftMaster Professional and Chamberlain, who are known for their exceptional craftmanship, durability, longevity, minimal maintenance over the years, and advanced technological and safety features. If you purchase an opener in a retail store or online, most of the time it will come with a pieced-together rail (vs a solid-steel rail) or no rail at all.

It is always our mission to repair your opener vs replace it if it makes the most sense. We are here to help you decide which option is best for you! Some reasons you may choose to replace your opener instead of repair would be if:
· The opener is quite old, repair costs will become more frequent, and a new opener will be needed soon anyways
· The cost of repair for the opener is close to or more than a new opener
· The needed replacement parts are no longer manufactured
· You would like to upgrade your opener because of noise reduction, more modern technological and safety features, or you need a stronger motor
-
Whether or not you should purchase a battery backup opener is up to preference! Some benefits to a battery backup will be:
· If you loose power to the home, you will still be able to open and close the garage door with the automatic opener.
· If you lose power, the opener may reset, resulting in having to reprogram all of your remotes/keypads/cars.

Yes! As long as you have a car that has the compatible HomeLink® feature, our technicians can get your car buttons programmed directly to the automatic opener so that you do not need to carry remote controls around anymore!

If you purchased your own garage door opener, we can definitely install it for you! We do, however, recommend having one of our openers installed if your able to for the following reasons:
· Warranty: when we install an opener of our own, it will come with a much longer warranty and it will be on parts AND labor vs just on labor. We stand behind the carefully chosen products that we install and are able to warrant them for longer.
· Quality: quality is SO important to us at O’Brien Garage Doors. We carefully hand-pick manufacturers known for durability, longevity, and strength. There is such a wide range of quality on the market today, so we definitely recommend the professional grade openers we install!
· Cost: generally, when the cost of the opener plus the cost of having it installed is considered, the total will be close to the same if not more to have a different opener installed. When this is the case, it is definitely a good choice to go with a reputable manufacturer with a comprehensive warranty on the product and installation.

There is an abundance of options to choose from when it comes to technology with the new openers! Some examples would be: rolling code for safety, wi-fi enabling, safety reversal, car button programming (HomeLink®), battery backup, remote access through smart device with free myQ app, built-in camera, secure package delivery (Amazon Key), Bluetooth technology, LED lighting, and more!

If you do not have enough ceiling space for an opener or just want to keep ceiling space free, our professional-grade, side-mount, jackshaft opener may be the perfect solution for you! This opener naturally reduces noise and vibration and has many premium features that come stock.
